Mike Redmon and Lynda Emery were two otherwise ordinary kids growing up in metropolitan Louisville Kentucky, but for being required to go before a judge to obtain legal authorization to get married. The reason: Lynda, age fifteen, was pregnant and Mike, the father, was only sixteen. As far as the law was concerned, they were both underage. While before the bench, the judge, a conservative and rather harsh individual, asked Mike a series of questions that included, "Do you love Lynda? Are you confident this is what you want to do?" Mike and Lynda found the rest of the judge's questioning somewhat vague. In the end the judge ruled: "I am going to authorize this marriage because both of your parents are in favor of it. But I am uncomfortable with it because I believe that You kids don't have a shot!" The judge's comment may have sounded heartless, cruel and judgmental but his assessment could easily be grounded in fact. Mid-teen marriages, then and now, seldom last.
