RICHTHOFEN: THE FLYING CIRCUS, 1917 is Vol. 2 of theEINDEKKER series published by Minden. It is a 76-page full-color book containing a solitaire, tactical, World War I air combat game with a focus on the dogfighting exploits of Manfred von Richthofen--the Red Baron--and his Flying Circus, formed in 1917. You pilot a single Albatros D-III or Fokker Dr.1 triplane as you perform a variety of missions--Trench Patrol, Combat Patrol, Trench Support--over the fields of France, in search of Allied bombers, reconaissance, and fighter planes. Scenarios are provided for both before and after the creation on the Flying Circus in June, 1917. The player takes the role of flying an individually-rated German fighter plane, performing missions over a seven day period. The game system handles the Allies. Historical commentary, aircraft profiles, and various solitaire game logs are provided along with standard, optional, and advanced rule sections. In addition to Richthofen, other rated German Ace pilots include Ernst Udet, Werner Voss, Lothar von Richthofen (Manfred’s younger brother), Eduard Ritter von Dostler, and Hermann Göring. Each is rated in important categories. Allied planes have unnamed pilots, and come in a wide variety of types (such as Nieuport 17, Spad 7, RAF SE-5a, Sopwith Triplane, RAF BE-2, DeHavilland DH-4, RAF FE-2, and several others). An Advanced Game is also provided, giving options that add even more detail to the characteristics of each plane, offering a more nuanced approach to play. You may play each scenario using the standard or Advanced game rules.Like its earlier sister game EINDEKKER, RICHTHOFEN offers a game that can create great narratives, and you seek to complete missions and down enemy planes, while avoid being shot down yourself.A full game can be played in less that an hour, and ranks high in playability and historicity. Game logs and instructions are provided allowing you to play the game in "pencil mode", without having to use physical components. So the choice is yours; use the map and components provided in the book, or use the logs and displays provided to play the game without components.RICHTHOFEN: THE FLYING CIRCUS, 1917 offers strong game play that involves strategy as well as providing histroical context and feel. With individual airplanes, pilots, and missions, along with a solid game system, it gives gamers and historical buffs a lot to deal with... in an enjoyable and playable manner.
